# Vespasian associates Titus in power and prepares a Flavian succession including Domitian

Date: 71

## The fact

From 71 [Vespasian](/people/vespasian) associated Titus in tribunician power and multiple consulships, advertising a Flavian succession that also included Domitian as younger son. It is not Domitian’s later reign as a twin.

It is one event.

## Context

Suetonius and Britannica independently print the father-son partnership. After a year of four emperors, a named succession is a cohesion-and-resilience offset relative to 69, still not a republic. Domitian’s later costs are his, not 71.

Vespasian’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below. Sharing a field with them is not a reason to drop a documented act, and it is not a reason to assign later consequences done in the name after death.

Conventional years are 9–79 CE. Surviving public files are later Suetonius, Tacitus, Josephus, coins, and encyclopedia pages. Vespasian did not typeset those later English pages. Dates here are received historical years.

Named person as heading of the dated public instrument. Later editors, museums, printers, or offices share publication. Complex where later carriers are the surviving public file.

## Evidence and sources

LacusCurtius Suetonius and Britannica independently describe Titus’s association in power under Vespasian.

Official or archival record: LacusCurtius — Suetonius, Life of Vespasian (https://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Roman/Texts/Suetonius/12Caesars/Vespasian*.html; University of Chicago / LacusCurtius).

## Significance

Stability path after civil war. Medium confidence on unique later [coup-risk](/drivers/coup-risk) coefficients, high on the partnership as received.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Titus was associated in power in the 70s. Not established: that 71 uniquely caused 96’s later crisis.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.

Established here: a sourced, dated public instrument with a named contribution by Vespasian.

They are not a public rating.

The driver `democratic-resilience` is attached because the mechanism named in Significance follows from this instrument, not because a standing list of welfare headings needed another tick. Vespasian did not file a later UNESCO form, a later Loeb colophon, or a later museum label as a personal act. A portrait or conventional bust is not this mechanism. Allegation, reconstruction, and established occurrence stay distinct.
