# Voltaire opens a long paid correspondence of praise with Catherine II

## The fact

From the early 1760s [Voltaire](/people/voltaire) corresponded with Catherine II, accepting gifts and publishing praise of an autocrat who partitioned Poland and crushed Pugachev.

## Context

A philosophe advertising a coup-empress is a resilience-harm path. Instruction à la commission is her instrument, not his. He still sold the advertisement.

Voltaire is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
