# The first part of The Protestant Ethic appears in the Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft

Date: 1904

## The fact

In 1904 [Max Weber](/people/max-weber) published the first instalment of Die protestantische Ethik und der ‘Geist’ des Kapitalismus in the Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik, which he co-edited. The claim is historical-cultural: a Protestant Beruf ethic elective-affinity with rational capitalist conduct, not a unique cause of factories. Religious ranking of confessions is a neighbouring cohesion cost, not copied here as a second success.

## Context

Weber was returning from years of illness. The American 1904 trip fed examples. Sombart’s capitalism books were the rival German programme. Sharing the Archiv with Jaffé and Sombart does not erase the essay’s author. Do not treat later business-school ‘Protestant ethic’ posters as this Archiv issue.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## Evidence and sources

MWG at https://www.mohrsiebeck.com/buch/max-weber-gesamtausgabe-mwg-alle-baende-9783161595219/ is the official critical-edition home of the ethic texts. SEP at https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/weber/ independently dates the 1904/05 Archiv publication.

Official or archival record: Max Weber-Gesamtausgabe — Mohr Siebeck (https://www.mohrsiebeck.com/buch/max-weber-gesamtausgabe-mwg-alle-baende-9783161595219/; Mohr Siebeck / MWG).

## Significance

Education path of modest-to-mid weight for a famous essay. High confidence on 1904 journal publication. No unique growth coefficient is supplied.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. 1904 Archiv is not the 1920 book form. Mixed effects of The first part of The Protestant Ethic appears in the Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft are separate paths.

## What is established and what is not

Established: the first Protestant Ethic instalment appeared in the Archiv in 1904. Not established: that it uniquely caused capitalist growth, or that the 1920 Gesammelte Aufsätze are this issue. Contribution is recorded as He authored the 1904 Archiv essay. Co-editors Jaffé and Sombart ran the journal; printers set it. The impact note is A public essay linking Beruf and capitalist conduct is a modest education path, not a measured GDP series. The dated heading stays The first part of The Protestant Ethic appears in the Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft on 1904-11-01, not a later statue, UNESCO listing, or school film. Printers, unnamed clerks, and later editors may appear in the same file without becoming this instrument. Later competitions, monuments, and adaptations are refused as extra lifetime acts of this person on this date.

Shared responsibility is part of The first part of The Protestant Ethic appears in the Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft. Naming Max Weber does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1904-11-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

The contribution type is direct. The attached driver is edu-[digital-learning-access](/drivers/edu-digital-learning-access). The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
