On 31 December 2020, WHO listed the Pfizer/BioNTech Comirnaty mRNA vaccine for emergency use, the first COVID-19 vaccine to receive WHO emergency validation. The listing enabled countries and UN procurement channels to accelerate access. This is a response milestone that weakens the pandemic driver over time through protection against severe disease and death; it is not an assertion that transmission ended on the listing date.
