# Zoran Zaev becomes Prime Minister of Macedonia

On 31 May 2017 Macedonia's parliament elected SDSM leader [Zoran Zaev](/people/zoran-zaev) prime minister, ending [Nikola Gruevski](/people/nikola-gruevski)'s party's decade in power. Lawmakers backed his 26-member government by 62 votes to 44 with five abstentions, ending a political crisis that had lasted almost three years.
