# Albert Einstein

## The offices he actually held

Einstein is a patent clerk who became an Academy professor and then an exile at IAS. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Albert-Einstein, Nobel at https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/physics/1921/einstein/biographical/, IAS at https://www.ias.edu/scholars/einstein, AIP at https://history.aip.org/exhibits/einstein/, Papers Project at https://einsteinpapers.press.princeton.edu/, SEP at https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/einstein-philscience/, FDR Library at https://www.fdrlibrary.org/, and FBI Vault at https://vault.fbi.gov/albert-einstein are the public file.

The first fact about his power is 1905 print. The second is 1915. The third is a 1939 signature he did not convert into lab command.

## What went wrong

1920 rally, 1933 erasure and exile, 1939 letter as weapons-advice, FBI file. Unique 1945 causation is not his unique lab.

## What improved

Four 1905 papers, GR, eclipse test as complex, photoelectric Nobel citation, 1946 control committee, 1955 manifesto.

### The 1905–1921 record tied revolutionary theory to testable physical problems

Einstein’s reputation was built through a sequence of dated papers rather than through a single discovery. In 1905, while employed at the Swiss patent office in Bern, he published work on light quanta, Brownian motion, special relativity and mass–energy equivalence. The [American Institute of Physics](https://history.aip.org/exhibits/einstein/) traces how those papers emerged before he held a major professorship and how the 1915 completion of general relativity extended his earlier attack on absolute space and time into a theory of gravitation. The 1919 eclipse observations associated with Arthur Eddington then made Einstein an international public figure because measurements of starlight near the Sun were presented as a test of the theory’s predicted light deflection. The Nobel Prize awarded for 1921, announced in 1922, did not cite general relativity; it recognised his services to theoretical physics, especially the law of the photoelectric effect. That distinction is important because Einstein’s public fame and the Nobel committee’s specific evidentiary basis were not identical.

### The 1933 rupture with Germany turned a scientific career into a political exile

The Nazi seizure of power in 1933 ended Einstein’s institutional life in Germany. While abroad, he resigned from the Prussian Academy and did not return to a country in which Jewish academics were being removed from public institutions; the [American Institute of Physics](https://history.aip.org/exhibits/einstein/) documents the move that ultimately placed him at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He became a United States citizen in 1940 while retaining Swiss citizenship. His political visibility also produced sustained government scrutiny: the [FBI Vault](https://vault.fbi.gov/Albert%20Einstein) preserves a large file assembled around his associations, political statements and security concerns, evidence of how a celebrated physicist could simultaneously be treated as a surveillance subject. Einstein supported refugee and anti-fascist causes, signed the 1939 letter to President Franklin Roosevelt warning that nuclear chain reactions might make extremely powerful bombs possible, and later advocated international control of atomic weapons. He died in Princeton on 18 April 1955, leaving a record in which scientific authority repeatedly intersected with citizenship, war and state suspicion.
