# Anil Chauhan

### Context

General Anil Chauhan became India’s second Chief of Defence Staff in September 2022, filling a post that had been vacant since the death of his predecessor, General Bipin Rawat. The [Press Information Bureau](https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1863084&lang=2&reg=48) announced that Chauhan would also serve as Secretary to the Department of Military Affairs. His appointment placed him at the center of India’s effort to improve coordination among the army, navy and air force, develop joint structures and align military planning with a rapidly changing security environment involving China, Pakistan, maritime competition and technological modernization.

### Record

Chauhan brought roughly four decades of army experience, including senior command and staff appointments, to the CDS role. The government’s [announcement of his assumption of office](https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1863755&lang=2&reg=48) emphasized jointness and the integration of the armed services. As CDS, his core institutional challenge was not battlefield command of every operation but the reform of a system in which service-specific structures and procurement traditions can resist integration. His tenure therefore needs to be assessed through progress on joint planning, theater-command debates, capability prioritization and the relationship between civilian defense policy and military professional advice.

### Consequences

The most durable consequence of Chauhan’s tenure will depend on which integration reforms survive him. In May 2026, the [Press Information Bureau](https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2259242&lang=1&reg=3) announced his successor, marking the approaching end of Chauhan’s time as CDS. That transition matters because structural military reform is necessarily multi-year: doctrine, procurement and command relationships cannot be transformed by one officeholder in isolation. Chauhan’s contribution is best framed as stewardship of India’s jointness agenda during a formative phase, while the final shape of theater commands and integrated capabilities depends on political decisions, service cooperation and implementation under successors.
