# Anthony Albanese

## The power he actually held

Anthony Albanese has been Prime Minister of Australia since 23 May 2022. Parliament enacts. The Governor-General assents. The AEC (https://www.aec.gov.au/) certifies. He is the political principal, not every EPBC desk officer or US submarine welder.

As of August 2026 he remains in office after a 3 May 2025 re-election. A later state DA is not this page’s completed Fact.

## What went wrong, and what is proven

The sharpest documented costs that are dated and named are [the Voice referendum, 14 October 2023](/facts/au-voice-2023) — a completed AEC defeat with about 60 percent No, remaining Closing-the-Gap series as other rows — and [record net overseas migration, 2022–23](/facts/au-nom-peak-2023) against housing. [December 2022 CPI at 7.8 percent](/facts/au-cpi-2022) is a completed inflation print he owned as PM, not a unique RBA board vote. ## Shared responsibility, and what the score does not say

The score does not say that every No vote is a unique later Closing-the-Gap coefficient. It does not say that a climate Act rebates a gas-plant extension. It does not convert a US submarine print into an Australian oath. Confidence is high on AEC certificates and legislation.gov.au texts, and medium where states, the RBA, Home Affairs, and later series sit between Cabinet and a welfare indicator.

Related people are counterpart rulers who actually shared files: Morrison, Starmer, Biden, Trump, Xi, Modi, Macron, von der Leyen, Prabowo, Lai, Guterres, Carney, Zelenskyy.

Official carriers include pm.gov.au, legislation.gov.au, aec.gov.au, and contemporaneous Reuters, AP, and ABC.

A prime minister is powerful enough to own those Cabinet choices. He is not powerful enough to be the unique author of a High Court holding or a state housing approval, and the dossier keeps that line visible. Keep 14 October 2023 off a 2035 target. Keep San Diego off a Voice writ. If those distinctions feel pedantic, they are the alternative to a Powering-Australia halo and the alternative to a cartoon.

The 2022 oath, the 2023 Voice, and the 2025 landslide are different dates. Treat them as texts. He is still prime minister in August 2026. AEC, ABS, Watt, and the Governor-General remain on the file so a brand cannot swallow them.

### Climate commitments, living costs, and the difference between targets and outcomes

Anthony Albanese has governed Australia during intense argument over housing affordability, energy transition, migration and the cost of living. His administration's political promises need to be separated from measurable outcomes for households. A substantial policy announcement can establish intent and fiscal priorities, but it is not itself proof that prices have fallen, emissions have met a target or families have gained access to homes. The housing target and delivery question is therefore relevant in a different way from the 2035 climate target.

On 18 September 2025 Albanese's government announced a 2035 greenhouse-gas emissions reduction target of 62–70 percent below 2005 levels. The official release explained its reliance on cleaner electricity, electrification, low-carbon fuels, new technologies and land-based removals. Those are policy directions rather than observed reductions. The announced investments, including a new industrial decarbonization fund, require scrutiny over financing, project selection and delivered emissions results. If public subsidies support projects that do not proceed, the fiscal cost remains even when the environmental benefit fails to materialize.

There is also tension between decarbonization and continued development of gas resources. A future gas strategy may be defended by proponents as supporting supply security, while opponents argue that it risks prolonging fossil-fuel infrastructure. A fair assessment should examine projected emissions, timelines, domestic energy needs and credible alternatives; it should not assume that every tonne of exported fuel is consumed domestically or that a stated net-zero commitment makes all extraction harmless. [Environmental decarbonization](/drivers/env-decarbonization-policy) and [fossil-fuel dependence](/drivers/fossil-fuel-dependence) can therefore move differently under the same government.

Living standards require equally precise treatment. Inflation, wages, rent and interest costs can diverge, so an average household-income trend need not describe the burden [borne](/people/elisabeth-borne) by a younger renter or low-income family. The administration's measures should be tested against housing completions, waiting lists, accessibility and regional distribution, rather than counted as a success simply because money was appropriated. Albanese's electoral mandate does not erase responsibility for difficult trade-offs, and criticism should not ignore reforms that have delivered independently verified improvements. The profile should follow concrete policy decisions and distinguish official targets from their subsequent results; a long list of announcements cannot replace that causal assessment.
