# Bezalel Smotrich ## Identity and office Bezalel Smotrich has been Israel’s finance minister since 29 December 2022 and, from 23 February 2023, a minister in the Defence Ministry for West Bank civilian affairs. As of September 2026 he is a living minister. Benjamin Netanyahu is the live prime minister. Itamar Ben-Gvir is the live police counterpart if public-complete. This run does not mint cleaner twins. Smotrich argued that Israel should not transfer money that could indirectly support hostile activity or payments he opposed, while critics warned that destabilizing the Palestinian Authority could worsen security and humanitarian conditions.
