# Caligula

The first fact about Caligula is a source limit. The richest narratives are later, written by men who needed a tyrant-vita: Suetonius under a new dynasty, Dio at centuries’ distance, Josephus after the Jewish war, Philo as an injured ambassador. Treating those books as body-cameras is naive. Treating the reign as unknowable is evasive.

The received harms that survive in dated print are not all jokes. Philo’s Embassy, in public English, records an order to place the emperor’s statue in the Jerusalem temple — a minority-rights instrument stronger than palace gossip because the target community wrote it. Loeb Suetonius and Dio print Gemellus and Macro dead, maiestas reopened, senators humiliated, taxes on the exposed, a Baiae pontoon, a northern campaign of purges and theatre. Living cult polarises an elite that had managed imperial worship with more tact. Incitatus and incest stay on the page as printed scandal, not as verified gazette notices. Camus and a 1979 film later sold cruelty as style.

The offsets are real in the same printed and material record: early amnesty and published accounts, a brief electoral gesture, largesse and grain, Frontinus’s statement that Gaius began Claudia and Anio Novus, completion of Augustus’s temple, museum portrait types from 1914 onward, UNESCO’s Rome listing, and digital Loebs that let readers check the jokes. Josephus’s assassination narrative is an extra-legal check, not a constitution.

What the score must not say: that a horse was consul; that a fever is a DSM diagnosis; that Camus is a primary source; that aqueducts rebate temple desecration; that Chaerea’s knives were a court. Complex contribution is the honest type. Confidence is high on 1913–1980 printings, museums, and listings, medium on most court killings, low on equine office and incest as forensic facts.

1913 is not 37. 1929 English Philo is not a lost imperial edict on papyrus, but it is a real brief. 1944 is a play. 1979 is a film. Nemi drainage is a modern state project labelled to a pleasure-hull. Off-family indicator padding is refused.

Related people are kin, prefect, assassin, Jewish ambassador, and later historians. They will be created as identities where missing. Open English carriers include Loeb/Perseus Suetonius (https://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Suet.+Cal.) and Philo’s Embassy in public English (https://www.earlyjewishwritings.com/text/philo/book40.html).

The useful question is not whether Gaius was ‘mad’. It is which dated later instruments still move rights, office, water, and polarisation, and how much of that movement can be attributed to a four-year name without invention. Dated later instruments, not a recovered palace diary, remain the public record. Dated later instruments, not a recovered palace diary, remain the public record.
