# Dante Alighieri

## The offices he actually held

Dante is a Florentine prior who became an exile and then a poet of one Comedy. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Dante-Alighieri, SEP at https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/dante/, Digital Dante at https://digitaldante.columbia.edu/dante/divine-comedy/, Princeton Dante at https://dante.princeton.edu/, Gutenberg Longfellow at https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/8800, and Monarchia English at https://oll.libertyfund.org/titles/alighieri-de-monarchia are independent public files.

The first fact about his power is a two-month priorate. The second is a 1302 sentence. The third is a poem that must not be split into a hundred Facts.

## What went wrong

White/Black faction, Boniface-Valois weather, exile and confiscation, contrapasso as fitted-harm teaching, signorial bread. 1865 is not his act. The Bargello type is later.

## What improved

De vulgari, Convivio, Monarchia as peace-and-law, the Comedy as one vernacular poem, Vita Nuova, Ravenna's last desk.

Related people: Virgil as named guide, Boccaccio as later lecturer, [Petrarch](/people/petrarch) as younger vernacular neighbour, Beatrice as literary engine, Cangrande, Cavalcanti, Boniface VIII, Aquinas as fictional speaker-neighbour, Henry VII, Guido Novello.

The live UUID stays. A fresco type is not a face. One poem, not a hundred cantos. Later Loeb, UNESCO, and encyclopedia pages are evidence, not additional acts. ### The 1302 exile converted Florentine factional politics into a permanent biographical rupture

Dante was born in Florence in 1265 and entered the city’s political life during the conflict between Guelf factions. He served in public office before the balance of power shifted while he was away from Florence. In January 1302 a Florentine sentence imposed a fine and exclusion from office, and a subsequent sentence threatened death if he returned without complying; the [Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/dante/) situates his intellectual development inside this political and civic history. Dante never returned to live in Florence. Exile meant dependence on a succession of patrons and courts, but it also gave his writing a wider Italian horizon: arguments about empire, papal power, civic disorder and moral responsibility were no longer abstractions from local government. The political wound appears throughout his works because named contemporaries, parties and institutions are judged within a universal moral architecture. His biography after 1302 is therefore not simply the story of a poet travelling between courts; it is the record of a condemned citizen writing about legitimacy while permanently excluded from his own city.

### The Comedy made a journey set in 1300 into a judgment on contemporary institutions

The *Comedy* presents an imagined journey through Hell, Purgatory and Paradise during the year 1300, using encounters with historical and contemporary figures to connect theology, ethics and politics. The English text available through [Project Gutenberg](https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/8800) shows how punishment and reward are organised through choices made in earthly life: rulers, clerics, soldiers, teachers and private citizens appear as morally accountable actors rather than as untouchable offices. Dante places opponents and admired figures alike inside that structure, so the poem repeatedly converts current political memory into an argument about justice. He worked on the poem during exile, and the final cantos were completed near the end of his life in Ravenna. Dante died there in September 1321 after returning from a diplomatic mission to Venice. The poem’s later status as a foundational work of Italian literature can obscure how specific its targets were: papal politics, imperial authority, Florentine factionalism and named acts of betrayal or public service are embedded in a narrative whose afterlife is universal but whose disputes were recognisably fourteenth-century.
