# Epiphanius I of Ukraine

### Context

Metropolitan Epiphanius became the primate of the newly formed [Orthodox Church of Ukraine](/organizations/orthodox-church-of-ukraine) at the end of 2018 and received the tomos of autocephaly from the Ecumenical Patriarchate in January 2019. [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jan/05/ukraine-new-orthodox-church-gains-independence-from-moscow) described the move as a historic break in the ecclesiastical relationship with Moscow. The development had both religious and geopolitical significance because church jurisdiction in Ukraine had long overlapped with questions of national identity, Russian influence and the canonical disputes of global Orthodoxy.

### Record

Epiphanius’s defining institutional act was not to create autocephaly alone but to become the elected head of the church that received it and to manage the transition afterward. [Reuters via Euronews](https://www.euronews.com/2019/01/06/ecumenical-patriarch-hands-over-decree-sealing-ukraine-church-independence) reported the formal handover of the tomos in Istanbul. The new church then faced the practical challenge of integrating communities, clergy and property in a country where many parishes remained linked to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church historically associated with the Moscow Patriarchate. Epiphanius publicly argued that unification should not be forced, a position documented by Orthodoxia.info.

### Consequences

The creation and consolidation of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine weakened Moscow’s exclusive claim to ecclesiastical authority over Ukrainian Orthodoxy and gave an independent Ukrainian church international recognition from [Constantinople](/people/bartholomew-i-of-constantinople) and later some other Orthodox churches. It also intensified disputes over canonical legitimacy, parish affiliation and church property. [Reuters via Euronews](https://www.euronews.com/2019/01/05/ecumenical-patriarch-signs-decree-granting-ukraine-church-independence) documented the independence decree itself. Epiphanius’s consequence is therefore institutional and symbolic: he became the central administrator and public representative of a church whose existence changed the religious map of Ukraine, while the broader schism within Orthodoxy remains unresolved.
