# Fyodor Dostoyevsky

The first fact about Dostoyevsky in a public catalog is a scaffold that did not fire. Britannica (https://www.britannica.com/biography/Fyodor-Dostoyevsky) dates the 23 April 1849 arrest and the 22 December Semyonovsky mock execution; the Kuznechny museum (https://eng.md.spb.ru/) and Goslitmuz (https://www.goslitmuz.ru/) keep the biographical file without becoming 1849 acts. Then Omsk katorga (1850–54), a winter convoy, barracks crowding written later in House of the Dead (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/37536), and Semipalatinsk enlistment. A Third Section dossier opens with the Petrashevtsy. Those are state-authored harms carried in this life.

Stellovsky’s 1865 rights-hostage contract; roulette at Wiesbaden and Baden; Vremya banned in May 1863 after a Poland number whose camp was imperial, not liberal; Demons (1871–72) using Nechaev as a demonic cell; A Writer’s Diary’s conservative-national pulpit and, separately, sourced antisemitic civic passages in the 1876–77 cluster; closeness to Pobedonostsev. Pushkin House (https://pushkinskijdom.ru/) is the academic neighbourhood of the journals and speech. None of that is a later film.

The offsets are also URLs. Poor Folk, 1846, in Nekrasov’s almanac. Vremya 1861 and Epoch 1864 as print industry. Notes from Underground (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/600). Crime and Punishment (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2554). The Gambler as dictated delivery, distinct from the losses. The Idiot. Insulted and Injured. Winter Notes. The Brothers Karamazov (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/28054). The 8 June 1880 Pushkin speech. Anna Snitkina’s 15 February 1867 partnership. Gutenberg’s author page (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/314) is a later English carrier, not 1846.

What the score must not say: that katorga is redeemed by being well written; that Diary antisemitism is a rumour; that 8 June washes 1877; that UNESCO or a museum ticket is a lifetime act; that every novel moved a macro crime series. Weights stay modest. Contribution is complex where the Third Section, Stellovsky, or censors author the instrument.

Method: one instrument per row. 22 December is not Omsk. Omsk labour is not Omsk infect. The Gambler is not Wiesbaden. Demons is not the Diary. Official and independent HTTPS pages differ.

If a commutation paper showed another square, the scaffold row would move. Unique mark-ledgers are not invented. Later cinema is reception.

1859’s Stepanchikovo cluster is a byline, not an amnesty. Epoch is not Vremya. Insulted and Injured is not Dead House. Winter Notes is not the May ban. Pobedonostsev did not co-write the Inquisitor; he received proofs. The Kuznechny rooms restored in the Soviet decades are not 1878 furniture as a Fact date. Readers who want only a Christian humanist will have to drop the Diary’s Jewish-question pages. Readers who want only a reactionary pamphlet will have to drop House of the Dead as testimony. Both sets of sentences are in the public English.

1846 is not 1849. 1849 is not 1862. 1866’s two books are two books. Off-family padding — a modern homicide series nailed to Raskolnikov without a mechanism — is refused. Where a number is not in Goslitmuz, Britannica, or the named Gutenberg carrier, it is not supplied.

### Crime and Punishment turned a murder plot into a sustained argument about ideas and responsibility

Dostoyevsky published *Crime and Punishment* in 1866, using the crime of Rodion Raskolnikov as the organizing event for a novel about moral reasoning, poverty, pride, guilt and punishment. The complete text remains available through [Project Gutenberg](https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2554), allowing the novel's causal structure to be read directly rather than reduced to the familiar outline of a student murdering an old pawnbroker. Raskolnikov's theory that exceptional people may stand outside ordinary moral constraints is tested not only by police investigation but by the psychological and social consequences of the killing. The novel's publication came after Dostoyevsky's own arrest, mock execution, imprisonment and Siberian exile, experiences that also shaped his later treatment of crime and punishment. His prison experience had already been transformed into *The House of the Dead*, available in [Project Gutenberg's edition](https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/37536). The 1866 novel therefore sits in a specific sequence: state punishment and penal observation preceded a fictional work that scrutinized both the rationalization of violence and the human consequences that follow it.

### Anna Grigoryevna's arrival changed the practical conditions under which his later work was produced

In 1866 Dostoyevsky hired the young stenographer Anna Grigoryevna Snitkina while under severe contractual and financial pressure. They married in 1867, and the partnership became central to the production and management of his later writing. The significance is visible in the publishing record preserved by [Project Gutenberg's Dostoyevsky collection](https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/314): the years after their marriage include major late works that culminated in *The Brothers Karamazov*. That novel, available in full from [Project Gutenberg](https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/28054), was published at the end of Dostoyevsky's career and extends themes that had occupied him since the 1860s—family authority, faith, doubt, guilt, violence and moral responsibility. Anna was not simply a biographical companion in this period; she became involved in stenography, manuscript preparation, finances and publishing arrangements while the couple dealt with debt and travel abroad. Their 1867 marriage therefore marks a material change in the infrastructure of Dostoyevsky's authorship, connecting the pressure-filled composition of the 1860s with the more organized production and publication of his final major novels.
