# Hassanal Bolkiah ## Identity and office Hassanal Bolkiah has been sultan of Brunei since 5 October 1967 and prime minister since 1984. He remains head of state, head of government, and Head of the official religion on 4 September 2026. Article 83(3) of the Constitution is the neighbourhood for Orders. Section 5 of the Syariah Penal Code saves his religious prerogative. He does not sit as every Syariah judge. Al-Muhtadee Billah is named as the 24 November 2025 successor.
