# Immanuel Kant

## The offices he actually held

Kant is a Prussian ordinary professor who wrote a stack of Critiques and also a stack of race essays. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Immanuel-Kant, SEP at https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/kant/, moral philosophy at https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/kant-moral/, religion at https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/kant-religion/, IEP at https://iep.utm.edu/kantview/, and Gutenberg later English at https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/1426 and https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/4280 are independent public files.

The first fact about his power is a Königsberg chair. The second is print. The third is a 1794 speech-ban.

## What went wrong

Race essays of 1775, 1785, and 1788 are documented hierarchical texts, not later smears. Observations 1764 ranks nations and sexes. Anthropology 1798 continues lecture rankings. Wöllner's cabinet order after Religion is a royal ban. Capital punishment in the 1797 doctrine of right is a justice cost. Perpetual Peace does not itself disarm Prussia.

## What improved

Critique of Pure Reason 1781/1787, Groundwork, second and third Critiques, Prolegomena, Enlightenment essay, Perpetual Peace as pamphlet, Religion as book, doctrine of right as law-treatise, the teaching chair, 1755 cosmology.

Related people: Hume as received awakener, Rousseau, Newton, Leibniz as predecessor, Herz, Frederick II, Frederick William II / Wöllner as censors, [Hegel](/people/georg-wilhelm-friedrich-hegel) as later Berlin reader, Fichte as later successor-neighbour, Mendelssohn as Enlightenment counterpart.

### The critical philosophy was built in a tightly dated series from 1781 to 1790

Kant spent almost his entire life in Königsberg, where he became professor of logic and metaphysics in 1770, but his most influential publications arrived relatively late. The first edition of the *Critique of Pure Reason* appeared in 1781 and a substantially revised second edition in 1787; the [Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/kant/) explains how the project asked what makes objective experience and knowledge possible while limiting claims that theoretical reason can establish about things beyond possible experience. The 1780s then produced a concentrated sequence: “What Is Enlightenment?” in 1784, the *Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals* in 1785, the *Critique of Practical Reason* in 1788 and the *Critique of Judgment* in 1790. This chronology matters because Kant’s accounts of knowledge, morality and aesthetics were not isolated systems published at once. They were successive attempts to define the legitimate scope of reason and to explain how universal obligation, judgment and freedom could be defended without treating speculative metaphysics as established knowledge.

### The 1790s religion controversy exposed a direct limit on Enlightenment-era academic freedom

Kant’s arguments about public reason eventually collided with Prussian censorship. *Religion within the Boundaries of Mere Reason* appeared in 1793 after difficulties with the censors, and in 1794 King Frederick William II’s government ordered Kant not to lecture or publish on religion in a way authorities regarded as distorting Christianity. The [Stanford Encyclopedia’s account of Kant’s philosophy of religion](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/kant-religion/) places the dispute within his attempt to distinguish moral religion from claims resting only on ecclesiastical authority. Kant complied with the royal order while the king lived, but after Frederick William II died in 1797 he returned publicly to questions of censorship and academic jurisdiction in *The Conflict of the Faculties* in 1798. The episode gives a concrete political setting to his famous 1784 defence of enlightenment as emergence from self-incurred immaturity. His philosophy praised the public use of reason, yet his own university career operated under a monarchy that could police religious teaching. Kant died in Königsberg on 12 February 1804.
