# James Comey

### Context

James Comey served as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from September 2013 until [President Donald Trump](/people/mig-donald-trump) fired him in May 2017. The [FBI’s historical profile](https://www.fbi.gov/history/directors/james-b-comey) records a tenure that crossed two administrations and placed Comey at the center of politically explosive investigations. His public significance rests on an unusual combination of institutional independence claims and highly consequential discretionary choices, especially the FBI’s handling of the [Hillary Clinton](/people/hillary-clinton) email investigation during the 2016 election and the bureau’s early investigation of Russian interference and links to Trump associates.

### Record

Comey’s handling of the Clinton email case generated criticism from both major parties. He publicly announced in July 2016 that the FBI was not recommending prosecution while sharply criticizing Clinton’s handling of information, then informed Congress shortly before the election that investigators had found additional emails requiring review. Months later, Trump dismissed him while the Russia investigation was active. [Reuters via Investing.com](https://www.investing.com/news/politics/trump-fires-fbi-director-comey-setting-off-us-political-storm-482110) described the firing as triggering a political storm. Comey later documented conversations with Trump in memoranda, which became part of a separate debate over executive pressure and the proper handling of sensitive FBI records.
