# Jean-Paul Sartre

## What the papers actually show

Jean-Paul Sartre is not a ministry of culture, and this page should not pretend he is. The usable record is Gallimard title pages, a 1945 review, occupation playbills, a 1960 manifesto, a 1964 refusal, and a 1970 kiosk. https://www.gallimard.fr/ is the official publisher portal. https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/sartre/ is the independent philosophical carrier. https://www.britannica.com/biography/Jean-Paul-Sartre is the independent biography. https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/literature/1964/press-release/ is the Academy’s own record of a prize refused.

## What went wrong, and what is proven

1952 Les Communistes et la paix is fellow-travel, not a membership card and not innocence. In the same years Temps modernes delayed and minimised the Gulag relative to Rousset and Camus. https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/sartre/ keeps that political file live. 1954 USSR remarks whitewashed unfreedom. 1952 smashed Camus in public; Merleau left the review. 1956 Hungary was a break and a delay. 1960 Castro reportage blessed a concentrating revolution; later rupture does not unprint 1960. The 1961 Fanon preface amplifies a colonised author and also glamourises counter-violence — split paths, one preface. 1970 Maoist fellow-travel, Cause du peuple sequester theatre, and factory-gate substitution of voice are documented in https://www.ina.fr/. Nekrassov (1955) ridiculed anti-communist journalists while camps were the quarrel. 1943 ontology’s civic silence on deportation is a rights cost of medium confidence, not a Vichy statute he signed. Late Benny Lévy working dependence was already contested while he lived.

## What improved, and how far

The offsets are also documents. https://www.britannica.com/topic/Nausea-novel-by-Sartre dates 1938. 1943 Néant is a treatise, 1943 Mouches a licensed occupation allegory, 1944 Huis Clos a public line. 1945 TM and the humanism lecture taught a public. 1946 Jewish-question essay is late relative to 1943 and still a rights text. 1960 Manifeste des 121 is shared anti-colonial insubordination. https://www.nybooks.com/articles/1964/12/17/sartre-on-the-nobel-prize/ prints the refusal as independence of letters, not as a guessed ego Fact. Critique I (1960), Fanon amplification, Russell Tribunal, May 1968 support, Saint Genet, Les Mots, and 1973 Libération are dated and mostly shared.

## Shared responsibility, and what this does not say

Beauvoir is not a chapter of Sartre. Fanon is not a preface-writer’s puppet. Russell’s tribunal is Russell’s as well. The 121 are 121. Gallimard’s wartime list is a house, not a maquis. Later films are not 1938. What would change the picture: a 1943 chapter on deportation; a 1952 TM that led on camps; a Nobel acceptance; a demonstrated forgery of the 121 signature; or a measured series that can be argued, with lag, as a unique consequence of Huis Clos rather than of later school programmes. Until then the page refuses fake Resistance sainthood and refuses fake innocence about 1952–54. See also https://data.bnf.fr/en/11923581/jean-paul_sartre/. 1938 is not 1943. 1945 TM is not 1952 peace. 1960 121 is not 1960 Castro. 1964 book is not 1964 refusal. https://www.theguardian.com/books/2015/jan/05/sartre-nobel-prize-literature-letter-swedish-academy records the letter that arrived too late. Paul Nizan’s 1940 death, André Gide’s Retour de l’URSS, and INA’s late tapes remain named because a portrait is not a complete mechanism. Confidence belongs on each path, not in a single café adjective.
