# Jesus

## The offices he actually held

Jesus is a Galilean preacher executed under a Roman prefect. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Jesus, Gutenberg Bible English at https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/10, Tacitus Annals 15.44 at https://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Roman/Texts/Tacitus/Annals/15B*.html, and Josephus English at https://penelope.uchicago.edu/josephus/ are the public file. Met Heilbrunn at https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/christ/hd_christ.htm is later art. Sinai monastery pages at https://www.sinaimonastery.com/ locate a later icon tradition, not a lifetime sitting.

The Person-page image is that later Sinai type. Copy says so. No contemporary likeness is used.

The first fact about his power is teaching without an autograph book. The second is a Roman cross. The third is a missing face.

## What went wrong

Temple incident, arrest, hearings, crucifixion. Unique last-word lists vary. Night-trial regularity is disputed.

## What improved

Baptism-as-opening, Galilean teaching corpus, table fellowship, a Twelve-mission as one, burial as named internment.

### The historical core is a first-century Jewish teacher executed under Pontius Pilate

The surviving evidence for Jesus comes from Christian texts written within the first century and from later non-Christian references. The Roman historian [Tacitus](/people/tacitus), writing in the early second century about Nero’s persecution after the fire of Rome, says that “Christus” suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of Pontius Pilate; the relevant passage is preserved in *Annals* 15 [LacusCurtius](https://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Roman/Texts/Tacitus/Annals/15B*.html). Josephus’s *Antiquities* also contains a less disputed reference to James as the brother of Jesus “who was called Christ,” alongside the much-debated *Testimonium Flavianum* [University of Chicago Josephus](https://penelope.uchicago.edu/josephus/). These sources do not independently reproduce the Gospel narrative, but they anchor two basic claims outside later church doctrine: a Jesus movement existed in the first century, and its central figure was associated with execution under Roman authority in Judaea. Tacitus places his notice in the aftermath of Rome’s fire of 64 CE, when Nero punished people identified as Christians, showing that the movement was established in the imperial capital within decades of the crucifixion.

### The arrest, crucifixion and burial traditions are narrated as a connected Passover sequence

The canonical Gospels place Jesus’s final public entry into Jerusalem, arrest, Roman sentencing, crucifixion and burial within the Passover period. The complete biblical text available through [Project Gutenberg](https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/10) preserves the differing narrative details: the Synoptic Gospels emphasise the Last Supper and Gethsemane arrest, while John structures the chronology differently and gives extended trial scenes. All four nevertheless converge on crucifixion under Pontius Pilate and burial before the first day of the week. That convergence supports treating arrest, execution and burial as related but distinct events rather than collapsing them into one undated legend. It also fixes responsibility across multiple institutions: Roman authority carried out crucifixion, while priestly leadership, disciples, crowds and individual officials occupy different roles in the narratives. Later Christian claims about resurrection and divinity are theological assertions grounded in these texts; they should not be represented as if Tacitus or Josephus independently verified every supernatural element of the Gospel accounts.
