# Juan Orlando Hernández

### Context

Juan Orlando Hernández served as president of Honduras from 2014 to 2022 and became one of the most dramatic examples of a former head of state later prosecuted in the United States for alleged participation in drug trafficking. In March 2024, a federal jury in New York convicted him on cocaine-importation and firearms-related charges. The [U.S. Department of Justice](https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/juan-orlando-hernandez-former-president-honduras-convicted-manhattan-federal-court) said prosecutors proved that he had used political power to facilitate large-scale cocaine trafficking. Hernández denied the accusations. The case transformed long-standing allegations about corruption and organized crime in Honduras into a criminal judgment in a U.S. court.

### Record

The 2024 conviction was a major accountability event because it concerned conduct allegedly committed while Hernández occupied the highest political office in Honduras. The later legal status, however, changed. [President Donald Trump](/people/mig-donald-trump) granted Hernández a pardon, and in April 2026 a U.S. court vacated the conviction as a consequence of that pardon. [Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/world/us-court-overturns-conviction-former-honduran-president-hernandez-2026-04-09/) reported the court action. A pardon does not rewrite the historical fact that a jury returned guilty verdicts, but the vacatur means the current legal record must not describe him as still serving a sentence on that conviction. By September 2026 he was preparing to return to Honduras.

### Consequences

Hernández’s case damaged confidence in Honduran institutions by showing how allegations of narco-state penetration could reach the presidency itself. The U.S. prosecution produced a detailed public record about relationships among traffickers, security institutions and political actors, while the later pardon created a new accountability controversy by cutting short the sentence and removing the conviction’s operative legal effect. [Reuters via Investing.com](https://www.investing.com/news/world-news/honduran-court-drops-charges-against-former-president-pardoned-by-trump-4884677) reported that a Honduran court also dropped local charges in September 2026. The consequence is therefore not a simple conviction story but a sequence of conviction, pardon, vacatur and renewed political-legal debate.
