# Karl Marx

## The offices he actually held

Marx is a Rhenish editor who became a London exile and the principal writer of an International. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Karl-Marx, SEP at https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/marx/, IEP at https://iep.utm.edu/marx/, MIA Manifesto at https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1848/communist-manifesto/, Capital I at https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1867-c1/, and IISH at https://iisg.amsterdam/en are independent public files.

The first fact about his power is a Cologne paper. The second is an 1848 pamphlet. The third is an 1867 book. None of those is 1917.

## What went wrong

Censorship, stereotyped headings in 1844, a force-line in the Manifesto, exile poverty, empire journalism that can apologise for destruction, a Bakunin war inside the International, a printed defence of Commune violence, a contested domestic file.

## What improved

Papers, Capital I, the International's addresses, Brumaire as coup-analysis, Gotha as programme-critique. Engels is named, not erased.

Related people: Engels, Jenny, Proudhon, Bakunin, Hess, Lassalle, Liebknecht, Hegel as teacher-neighbour, Ricardo as economic neighbour, [Lenin](/people/vladimir-lenin) as later user not a colleague.

The live UUID stays. 1917 is not his autograph. Later Loeb, UNESCO, and encyclopedia pages are evidence, not additional acts. ### Exile and the revolutions of 1848 turned Marx’s political writing into a transnational project

Marx’s political career repeatedly collided with censorship and expulsion. After earlier work in Germany and Paris, he and Friedrich Engels published the *Manifesto of the Communist Party* in February 1848 as revolutionary upheavals spread across Europe; the full text and publication history are preserved by the [Marxists Internet Archive](https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1848/communist-manifesto/). Marx returned to the Rhineland during the revolutions, edited the *Neue Rheinische Zeitung*, and was expelled from Prussia in 1849 before settling permanently in London. From exile he analysed the defeat of the revolutionary wave rather than treating it as a completed victory. *The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte*, written in 1851–1852, examined Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte’s December 1851 coup and the social coalitions that made authoritarian rule possible. The sequence matters because Marx’s later theory was produced by a political refugee observing failed revolutions, class alliances and [state repression](/drivers/state-repression) at close range, not by an academic writing at a distance from contemporary political conflict.

### Capital and the First International linked economic analysis to organisational conflict

Marx published volume I of *Capital* in 1867 after years of work in London, using the commodity, value, wage labour, surplus value and accumulation to analyse capitalist production; the complete first volume is available in the [Marxists Internet Archive](https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1867-c1/). The project remained unfinished at his death: Engels edited volume II in 1885 and volume III in 1894 from Marx’s manuscripts. Marx was also active in the International Working Men’s Association founded in 1864, drafting addresses and intervening in disputes over strategy. After the Paris Commune of 1871 he wrote *The Civil War in France*, defending the Commune while analysing its defeat. Conflict with Mikhail Bakunin and his allies culminated at the Hague Congress in 1872, where organisational and political disagreements fractured the International. Marx died in London on 14 March 1883. The record therefore combines a long-form critique of political economy with repeated attempts to influence real organisations whose internal disputes he could not simply resolve through theory.
