# Laozi

The first fact about Laozi is a source limit. The richest early narrative is Han, written centuries after the conventional Spring and Autumn setting. The richest objects were unseen until 1973 and 1993. A dossier that treats Shiji as a photograph is naive. A dossier that treats the Daodejing as a random slogan pack is evasive.

The documented harms in the later public record are Cultural Revolution wrecking of Daoist temples, imperial and PRC canon-and-association control of the Laozi-named religion, commentarial uses of yielding that naturalise subordination, Huang-Lao quietism as a court cover, toxic immortality practice in later Daoist religion, commodity wellness, giant ancestor statues, and ticketed mountain rents. Those are dated. They are not a sixth-century police file.

The offsets are also dated: Mawangdui silk recensions, Guodian partial bundles, Legge, Waley, Lau, Henricks, Siku preservation of Wang Bi, Needham’s public history of Daoist techniques, UNESCO listings of Wudang and Qingcheng-Dujiangyan, museum display, and digital text. Those gains do not rebate wrecked halls. They are separate paths.

What the score must not say: that Li Er is a verified civil identity; that Laozi built Dujiangyan; that a 1990s statue is a portrait from life; that UNESCO undid 1966; that wuwei is automatically a rights charter; that Waley authorised gift-shop Daoism. Complex contribution is the honest type. Confidence is high on 1973–1998 archaeology and on 1891–1963 editions, medium on commentarial politics, low on Luyi as a natal village.

Related people are compilers, commentators, a Han historian, Confucius as a legendary interlocutor, Needham as a modern historian, and PRC political users. They will be created as identities where missing. Off-family indicator padding — a health series nailed to a valley metaphor without a mechanism — is refused.

1973 is not a Zhou reign year. 1994 is not corvée for a Ming palace. A Shiji sentence is a Han legend, which is why the vita is not upgraded. Guodian’s partial bundles are a different kind of evidence from Waley’s prose. Nature’s manuscript-science reporting is another kind: conservation and palaeography, not a new author.

Temple registration in 1957 and temple wrecking in 1966 are different instruments. Festival revival in the 1990s is not the Zhengtong canon. Soft-power speeches in 2014 are not silk. If those distinctions feel pedantic, they are the alternative to a statue and the alternative to a cartoon.

What would change the picture: a contemporaneous inscription naming Li Er as author of the received book; a securely dated Zhou autograph; a measured series that can be argued, with lag, as a consequence of a named instrument rather than of later churches and states. Until then the dossier refuses fake birthdays and refuses fake eternity.

The live score, if evidence is published and existing driver-indicator links can see these paths, will look like a sum of knowledge gains from excavation and edition, conservation listings, and later extractive, coercive, and commercial uses of the name. If it looks too neat, the confidence fields were ignored. A closed vita is not an insult to Chinese philosophy. It is how a Person page stays honest about a book that outgrew any one teacher. Keep the excavated book and the invented teacher on separate rows. Keep the excavated book and the invented teacher on separate rows.
