# Lee Jae-myung

## The power he actually held

Lee Jae-myung has been president of South Korea since 4 June 2025. Yonhap at https://en.yna.co.kr/ and Reuters at https://www.reuters.com/ record the same 3 June 2025 snap win. The Constitution makes him head of state and of the executive. It does not make him the National Assembly, the Bank of Korea, a Supreme Court bench, a chaebol board, USFK, or a provincial governor. He is not Yoon Suk Yeol.

As of August 2026 he remains in office. Han Seong-sook has been prime minister since 1 July 2026. A 2028 Assembly ballot is not this page’s completed Fact.

## What went wrong, and what is proven

The sharpest documented costs that are dated and named [begin](/people/benny-begin) in Seongnam, not in the presidency. [Daejang-dong](/facts/kr-lee-daejang-2015) is a completed public-private development controversy from his mayoralty: private developers were later convicted in a first-instance 2025 cluster; Lee’s own breach-of-trust and conflict-of-interest indictment is not a completed conviction — the presidential trial was suspended. Store that status. Do not convert an allegation into a unique later barred-from-office coefficient.

The election-law file is a sequence, not a cartoon. On [15 November 2024](/facts/kr-lee-election-law-2024) the Seoul Central District Court found him guilty of disseminating false information under the Public Official Election Act (golf and Baekhyeon-dong remarks) and imposed one year in prison, suspended for two years. On 26 March 2025 the Seoul High Court acquitted. On [1 May 2025](/facts/kr-lee-sc-remand-2025) the Supreme Court en banc overturned that acquittal and remanded with instructions to find guilt on those statements. After the oath, on [9 June 2025](/facts/kr-lee-art84-2025) the High Court stayed retrial under Article 84.

## What improved, and how far

[Seongnam’s 2010 debt moratorium](/facts/kr-lee-seongnam-moratorium-2010) is a completed municipal fiscal instrument, not a 2025 statute. On [3 December 2024](/facts/kr-lee-martial-law-2024) Yoon declared martial law. Lee was opposition leader, not the author of that decree. He live-streamed, climbed a fence, and helped force a 190–0 Assembly vote to lift it. Store his role honestly.

## Shared responsibility, and what the score does not say

The score does not say that every Daejang-dong won is a unique later personal theft. It does not say that a 1 May 2025 remand is a completed unique prison term. It does not convert a 2016 Seongnam voucher into a 2025 statute. It does not treat Lee as the author of Yoon’s decree. Confidence is high on NEC prints, the oath, and named court dates, and medium where untried counts, later CPI, and OPCON talks sit between a speech and a welfare indicator.

A president is powerful enough to own those 2025 statutes. He is not powerful enough to be the unique author of a US tariff schedule or of a Supreme Court remand, and the dossier keeps that line visible. Keep 2010 Seongnam off a 2025 coupon. Keep 3 December 2024 off a 3 June 2025 ballot. If those distinctions feel pedantic, they are the alternative to a halo and the alternative to a cartoon.

The 2016 dividend, the 2024 fence, and the 2025 oath are different dates. Treat them as texts. A 2026 local print is not a 2028 certificate. He is still president in August 2026. Han, the Assembly, the courts, BoK, and USFK remain on the file so a brand cannot swallow them.

### Documented record and accountability

The first correction is legal, not ideological: Lee Jae-myung’s recent court record concerns domestic South Korean criminal and election-law proceedings, not an International Criminal Court prosecution. The most consequential judgment in the immediate pre-presidential chronology came on 15 November 2024, when a Seoul court imposed a one-year prison term suspended for two years in an election-law case involving statements made during the 2022 presidential campaign. That judgment did not become a final disqualification. In May 2025 the Supreme Court remanded the case, and after Lee became president on 4 June 2025 the Seoul High Court postponed the retrial while the constitutional protection of a sitting president under Article 84 was considered. A separate public-funds case followed its own track. These proceedings matter because they create a real accountability question, but collapsing them into a generic “trial” label erases both jurisdiction and procedural status.

Political responsibility also has to remain distinct from judicial guilt. Lee’s presidency followed the 3 June 2025 snap election, while his earlier record includes municipal welfare experiments, opposition leadership during the martial-law crisis, and later national measures on industrial and household policy. The legal cases are therefore one strand in a broader institutional record, not a substitute for it.

The strongest reading is conditional: unresolved or stayed proceedings remain relevant to public trust, but they are not equivalent to a final conviction that removed him from office. Electoral mandate, executive action, and court process should be tracked on separate dates.

The documentary record supports a bounded reading rather than a personality verdict. The Seoul High Court postponed Lee Jae-myung's election-law retrial after his inauguration, citing the constitutional issue surrounding criminal proceedings against a sitting president. Yonhap records Lee's 15 November 2024 suspended prison sentence in the election-law case and a separate 19 November indictment concerning alleged misuse of public funds. Those sources establish particular events and institutional positions; they do not license claims about motives that are not documented, and they do not turn later reputation into evidence for earlier conduct.
