# Leonardo da Vinci

## The offices he actually held

Leonardo is a workshop pupil who became a court engineer. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Leonardo-da-Vinci and Met Heilbrunn at https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/leon/hd_leon.htm are independent lives. Louvre pages at https://www.louvre.fr/en/explore/the-palace/the-mona-lisa carry later public pictures. Santa Maria delle Grazie heritage at https://www.polomuseale.lombardia.beniculturali.it/en/museums/santa-maria-delle-grazie/ locates the Last Supper wall. Royal Collection anatomical drawings at https://www.rct.uk/collection/leonardo-da-vinci-drawings are later carriers. Ambrosiana at https://www.ambrosiana.it/en/ holds the Vitruvian sheet as a later door. Uffizi at https://www.uffizi.it/en locates Florentine panels. Amboise at https://www.chateau-amboise.com/en/ is later house heritage, not 1516 autograph.

The first fact about his power is a wall and a kept panel. The second is a court engineer brief that includes war. The third is a private notebook file he did not print.

## What went wrong, and what is proven

The 1476 accusation is a dated file and a dismissal. Adoration and Anghiari are incomplete public jobs. The Sforza horse was wrecked in 1499. Borgia service is military. The Arno diversion failed. Anatomy stayed private. Those are different mechanisms.

## What improved, and how far

Workshop training, the 1483 contract, Last Supper as a wall, Pacioli plates, Mona Lisa as method, Amboise pension, Melzi as paper-heir are the knowledge path. Sharing them with patrons and collaborators is required.

## Shared responsibility

The dossier does not say that Leonardo commanded Borgia's troops. It does not say that 1911 is 1503. It does not say that Windsor HTML is a 1510 atlas.

BNCF at https://www.bncf.firenze.sbn.it/ and V&A at https://www.vam.ac.uk/ are later drawing doors. Later Loeb, UNESCO, and encyclopedia pages are evidence, not additional acts. ### Florence and Milan made painting, engineering and anatomy parts of the same working practice

Leonardo was born in 1452 and entered the professional world of Florentine art through Andrea del Verrocchio’s workshop; by 1472 he was recorded in the painters’ guild of Saint Luke. Works now associated with the early Florentine phase, including the *Annunciation* and the unfinished *Adoration of the Magi*, belong to collections presented by the [Uffizi Galleries](https://www.uffizi.it/en). After moving to Milan in the 1480s, Leonardo worked for Ludovico Sforza on painting, court spectacle, military and hydraulic projects, while filling notebooks with studies of mechanics, optics and the human body. The separation between “artist” and “inventor” is therefore modern rather than faithful to his practice. His anatomical investigations in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries used dissection and repeated drawing to study muscles, bones, organs and proportion. These sheets were not published as a medical textbook in his lifetime, which limited their immediate scientific circulation even though their observational detail later became central to his reputation.

### The 1516 move to France turned the last years into a royal-patronage phase

In 1516 Leonardo accepted the invitation of Francis I and moved to France, spending his final years near the royal residence at Amboise. The [Château d’Amboise](https://www.chateau-amboise.com/en/) documents the royal setting in which Francis I gathered Italian artists and humanists and in which Leonardo’s last French period is remembered. He died at Clos Lucé on 2 May 1519. That move followed decades in which political upheaval repeatedly changed his patrons: Sforza rule in Milan collapsed in 1499, Leonardo returned to Florence, later worked again in Milan, and spent time in Rome before leaving Italy. The survival of his notebooks became a second history after his death. The Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan preserves the *Codex Atlanticus*, the largest single collection of Leonardo’s drawings and notes [Biblioteca Ambrosiana](https://www.ambrosiana.it/en/). Because those pages were dispersed, rebound and studied across centuries, many of the “inventions” now associated with Leonardo were posthumously reconstructed from working notes rather than devices manufactured and adopted during his lifetime.
