# Michelangelo

## The offices he actually held

Michelangelo is a Ghirlandaio apprentice who became Julius's sculptor, then a vault painter, then architect of St Peter's. Britannica at https://www.britannica.com/biography/Michelangelo dates Pietà, David, 31 October 1512, 31 October 1541, 1546, and 18 February 1564. Vatican Museums Sistine pages at https://www.museivaticani.va/content/museivaticani/en/collezioni/musei/cappella-sistina.html hold the chapel. Accademia David at https://www.accademia.org/explore-museum/artworks/michelangelos-david/ is a later indoor carrier of the 1504 colossus. Met Heilbrunn at https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/mich/hd_mich.htm and Smarthistory at https://smarthistory.org/michelangelo-ceiling-of-the-sistine-chapel/ are independent teaching doors. Casa Buonarroti at https://casabuonarroti.it/ is later house-museum, not 1490. Uffizi at https://www.uffizi.it/en locates Medici neighbourhood. Holy See pages at https://www.vatican.va/ carry St Peter's later fabric. Cambridge at https://www.cambridge.org/core/ is a third life.

The first fact about his power is a signed Pietà plus a civic David. The second is a vault Julius made him paint. The third is a basilica office whose dome others finished.

## What went wrong

1505 is a trap. 1506 is a quarrel. 1520 is wasted marble. 1529–30 is siege and hiding. Workshop crews are unnamed. Paul IV hated the wall. 1565 drapes are not his last chisel.

## What improved

Pietà, David, ceiling, Judgment as unveiled, St Peter's appointment, Campidoglio brief, dome model. Julius, Paul III, and unnamed plasterers share files.

### The Sistine ceiling was a four-year papal commission with a documented change of scope

Michelangelo signed the contract for the Sistine Chapel ceiling on 8 May 1508 under Pope Julius II. The Vatican Museums explain that the initial scheme called for twelve apostles and ornamental decoration, but the programme expanded into the much larger Genesis cycle with prophets, sibyls, ancestors of Christ and corner narratives [Vatican Museums](https://www.museivaticani.va/content/museivaticani/en/collezioni/musei/cappella-sistina.html). The work was completed by 31 October 1512 and inaugurated at Mass on 1 November. Those dates matter because the ceiling was not a spontaneous private masterpiece; it was negotiated court labour carried out inside a papal building project already affected by structural problems and by the reconstruction of St Peter’s. Michelangelo’s status as a sculptor did not prevent the commission from consuming four years of his career, and the completed ceiling became part of papal ceremony, including the chapel’s later role in conclaves. Artistic achievement and institutional patronage were inseparable in the project.

### The Last Judgment and St Peter’s extended his Vatican role into old age

More than two decades later, Michelangelo returned to the same chapel for the *Last Judgment*. Clement VII discussed the commission with him in 1533; work proceeded under Paul III from 1536 to 1541, covering the altar wall with a radically different composition centred on the returning Christ [Vatican Museums](https://www.museivaticani.va/content/museivaticani/en/collezioni/musei/cappella-sistina.html). The fresco immediately generated disputes over nudity and decorum, and later alterations covered parts of the bodies. Michelangelo’s papal service then shifted decisively into architecture: in 1546, at roughly seventy-one, he became chief architect of the new St Peter’s Basilica and redesigned the central plan and dome system. He died in Rome in 1564 before the dome itself was completed. This late sequence complicates the image of a single-medium artist. Sculpture remained central to his identity, but his most consequential public commissions were also fresco cycles and a basilica design whose construction continued after his death, binding his legacy to papal institutions over more than half a century.
