# Nikola Tesla

## What the papers actually show

Nikola Tesla is not a ministry of energy, and this page should not pretend he is. The usable record is patents, an AIEE paper, a Westinghouse licence, a Niagara station log, a boat patent, a failed Long Island tower, a Supreme Court volume, and a Belgrade archive. https://patents.google.com/patent/US381968A and https://patents.google.com/patent/US382280A are federal instruments of 1 May 1888. https://ethw.org/Milestones:Adams_Hydroelectric_Generating_Plant,_1895 is a utility opening on 26 August 1895. https://www.britannica.com/biography/Nikola-Tesla is the independent biographical carrier. https://tesla-museum.org/en/home/ is the archival home, not a U.S. National Park Service Tesla site.

## What went wrong, and what is proven

The $50,000 Edison bonus is a later legend, not a ledger. https://ethw.org/Nikola_Tesla and https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/how-edison-westinghouse-and-tesla-battled-over-electricity-120438080/ place Tesla in and then out of Edison Machine Works in 1885 without converting the dollar story into a count. Rahway’s 1886 lamp company dumped him into casual labour. He released Westinghouse royalties in the 1890s refinancing. Colorado Springs in 1899 overclaimed wireless power through the earth. Wardenclyffe, financed by J.P. Morgan in 1901 as wireless telegraphy, expanded toward a power dream, stopped around 1905, and was demolished in 1917: https://teslasciencecenter.org/history/tower/ and https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/nikola-tesla-tower-that-became-million-dollar-folly-11074324/. Marconi’s 12 December 1901 transatlantic signal took the market. Later hotel bills, teleforce interviews, and wartime seizure of papers are documented. https://www.loc.gov/resource/usrep.usrep320001/ is Marconi Wireless Telegraph Co. v. United States, 320 U.S. 1 (21 June 1943): prior art including Tesla, Lodge and Stone, decided after Tesla’s death, not a unique coronation as inventor of radio.

William Kemmler’s electric chair is not this page. Alternating-current electrocution publicity is Edison’s instrument. Do not dump Auburn Prison onto Tesla.

Those paths rest on patents, IEEE milestone pages, museum history, and contemporaneous reporting. They do not require a theory of a stolen notebook or of a saintly vegetarian. They require a distinction between a motor patent and a tower that did not work.

## What improved, and how far

The offsets are also documents. The 16 May 1888 AIEE paper and the May 1888 Westinghouse licence put polyphase motors into an industrial firm. Westinghouse lighting at the 1893 Columbian Exposition is public proof. https://patents.google.com/patent/US454622A is the 1891 coil/lighting patent. https://patents.google.com/patent/US613809A is the 1898 remote-control boat. https://patents.google.com/patent/US645576A is the 1900 wireless-method grant. https://ethw.org/IEEE_Edison_Medal records the strained 1917 presentation. https://tesla-museum.org/en/museum/history/ dates the 1952 museum and 1955 opening. https://www.unesco.org/en/memory-world/nikola-teslas-archive is the 2003 Memory of the World listing. https://tesla-museum.org/en/museum/heritage-protection/ is the museum’s own heritage page.

Galileo Ferraris, George Westinghouse, Benjamin Lamme, Guglielmo Marconi, and J.P. Morgan share several of those files. Sharing is not a reason to drop Tesla’s patents, and it is not a reason to award them at royal-decree weight.

## Shared responsibility, and what this does not say

Westinghouse’s shop, Niagara’s financiers, and unnamed glassblowers and tunnel men are not extras. A twenty-mile line to Buffalo is not a continental interconnection. A boat on a pond is not a missile force. A coil in a lecture hall is not a city powered without wires.

The page does not say that Tesla stole the rotating field from Ferraris in a way the 1888 U.S. patents cannot share. It does not say that Edison’s later myth cancels Niagara. It does not say that Morgan suppressed a working free-energy grid. Confidence is high where a patent, IEEE milestone, or museum founding minute names the instrument, and medium where bonus legends, death-ray interviews, or later car brands stand between the paper and a welfare indicator.

See also https://www.smithsonianmag.com/innovation/extraordinary-life-nikola-tesla-180967758/ and https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/320/1/. Those URLs are identity-adjacent independent and judicial carriers, not Wikipedia as a causal source.

Patent 381,968 is not the Adams plant. The Adams plant is not Wardenclyffe. Wardenclyffe is not the 1943 U.S. Reports volume. If those distinctions feel pedantic, they are the alternative to a wizard statue and the alternative to a theft pamphlet.

Assistants and counterparties remain named because a manufacturer’s payroll is the actual mechanism of most installed machines. Charles F. Peck, Alfred S. Brown, George Westinghouse, Benjamin Lamme, Edward Dean Adams, and George Scherff are not colour. Galileo Ferraris’s Turin rotating field is not a rumour. Marconi’s 1901 signal is not a footnote to a portrait.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original patent with a different inventor and date; an Adams log that the plant did not open on 26 August 1895; a surviving Edison bonus contract for $50,000; a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of Wardenclyffe rather than of wired utilities; or a 320 U.S. 1 holding that uniquely assigned radio to Tesla alone. Until then, the page refuses fake uniqueness and refuses fake innocence.

The live related people are laboratory, rival, financier, and later industrial users. Some will be created as identities where missing, then later enriched if they receive their own pages. Off-family indicator padding — a health series nailed to a coil without a mechanism — is refused.

Readers who want a wizard will be disappointed on purpose. Readers who want only a martyr pamphlet will also be disappointed: the 1888 patents, Niagara, and the 1898 boat sit on the same graph as Wardenclyffe, Colorado overclaims, and hotel bills, with different dates and different drivers. The poll on the related article asks which documented act should weigh most. That is a reader question. The museum door remains https://tesla-museum.org/en/home/. The motor text remains https://patents.google.com/patent/US381968A. The station article remains https://ethw.org/Milestones:Adams_Hydroelectric_Generating_Plant,_1895.
