# Rio Tinto CEO Jakob Stausholm

### Leadership transition and the correct period of responsibility

Jakob Stausholm was [Rio Tinto](/organizations/rio-tinto)'s chief executive from January 2021 until Simon Trott succeeded him on 25 August 2025, rather than remaining its incumbent CEO indefinitely. The company's [22 May 2025 succession announcement](https://www.riotinto.com/en/news/releases/2025/rio-tinto-announces-chief-executive-succession-plan) placed his tenure in the context of rebuilding relationships and realigning investment toward materials associated with the energy transition. Rio Tinto's [15 July appointment announcement](https://www.riotinto.com/en/news/releases/2025/rio-tinto-appoints-simon-trott-as-chief-executive) specified the date of the handover. These dates define the period in which executive decisions can be attributed directly to him. His leadership should not be confused either with the company's earlier destruction of Juukan Gorge, which occurred before he became chief executive, or with decisions made by the new executive team after the handover.

### Indigenous heritage, negotiated remedy and the limits of repair

The destruction of the Juukan Gorge rock shelters in May 2020 became a defining test of Rio Tinto's relationship with the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura peoples. Stausholm inherited the aftermath rather than personally initiating the demolition as chief executive. Under his leadership, the company [announced an agreement with the PKKP Aboriginal Corporation on 28 November 2022](https://www.riotinto.com/en/news/releases/2022/pkkp-and-rio-tinto-to-create-juukan-gorge-legacy-foundation) covering remedy, a Traditional Owner-controlled legacy foundation and further work on the damaged site. Rio Tinto also [described intended co-management reforms in November 2022](https://www.riotinto.com/news/releases/2022/rio-tinto-acknowledges-governments-response-to-juukan-gorge-report). These actions are substantive evidence of a remedial process, but corporate descriptions cannot alone establish whether Indigenous communities consider trust fully restored or whether protections are equally effective across other operations.

### Strategy, extraction and handover consequences

The company credited Stausholm with orienting its portfolio toward growth in minerals used in electrification and industrial transition, while acknowledging the need for better operating performance. Its [succession statement in May 2025](https://www.riotinto.com/en/news/releases/2025/rio-tinto-announces-chief-executive-succession-plan) presented this as a strategic platform for his successor. The [July 2025 appointment notice](https://www.riotinto.com/en/news/releases/2025/rio-tinto-appoints-simon-trott-as-chief-executive) selected Simon Trott, then iron ore chief, to pursue operational delivery. The transition separates portfolio choices from their eventual environmental, financial and labour outcomes. Mine development can supply material needed for energy infrastructure while producing local land, water and heritage risks. The quality of a leadership legacy depends on both the investment thesis and the controls that prevent promised community protections from becoming paperwork without effective consent.
