### Chelsea sale proceeds still frozen and under scrutiny

In March 2026, UK authorities were examining whether the frozen proceeds from Roman Abramovich’s 2022 sale of Chelsea Football Club could be treated as proceeds of crime. The Guardian reported that the roughly £2.5 billion sale fund remained unresolved because of disagreement over how it could be distributed for Ukraine-related humanitarian purposes. The scrutiny added a potential criminal-law dimension to a dispute already shaped by sanctions imposed on Abramovich after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The event does not establish that the money is criminal property; the reporting described an investigation and legal consideration, not a final confiscation judgment. It does, however, show that the promised transfer of sale proceeds into humanitarian use remained blocked years after the club changed hands.
