# Sergei Udaltsov

### Context

Sergei Udaltsov is best understood through the office and institutional setting in which the record was made, rather than through reputation alone. Udaltsov has been a long-running left-wing opponent of the Kremlin and was one of the organizers associated with the large 2011–12 anti-government protest movement. [Reuters via Yahoo](https://www.yahoo.com/news/left-wing-critic-putin-detained-140835467.html) provides the documentary anchor for that role. He previously served a prison term after being convicted of organizing mass unrest, charges he and supporters regarded as politically motivated. This matters because formal authority determines what could reasonably be attributed to Sergei Udaltsov and what remained in the hands of other officials, courts, parties, agencies or armed actors. Udaltsov complicates a simple ideological picture of [Russian opposition](/organizations/russian-opposition) because he criticizes [Putin](/people/vladimir-putin) from the left and has not aligned with every position associated with liberal opposition groups. A useful reading therefore starts with chronology, separates personal choices from structural constraints, and treats later political claims as claims unless they are supported by the cited record.
