# Wes Streeting

The UK government lists Streeting as Secretary of State for Defence and says he took the post on 20 July 2026. That makes him a cabinet-level actor in Britain's military support for Ukraine and in its working relationship with the Pentagon. His public account of the 15 October meeting with Hegseth matters because Starlink is not merely a consumer communications service in wartime Ukraine: it is used by military units and has become entangled with questions about allied leverage, private infrastructure and battlefield dependence.

Streeting told reporters that he and Hegseth had welcomed the restoration of Ukraine's access to Starlink. Reuters' account of his remarks stressed an important limit: Streeting said the two men did not discuss why access had been restricted in the first place. The strongest reading in Streeting's favour is therefore narrow. He was reporting the outcome he had been given in a face-to-face defence meeting, not claiming to have audited SpaceX's network or resolved the policy dispute himself.

The next day's evidence complicated that reassuring message. Zelenskyy said in Brussels that speed was being restored but was "not fully" back to its previous level, and said the reduced performance had affected Ukraine's ability to shoot down some drones. That does not prove Streeting misstated what Hegseth told him; it shows a gap between a diplomatic assurance that access had been restored and the operational condition reported by Ukraine. The accountability question is therefore about precision: ministers should distinguish restoration of access from restoration of full performance when the difference can carry battlefield consequences.

Streeting's role also connects the dispute to [Elon Musk](https://factrail.ai/people/elon-musk), whose SpaceX operates Starlink, and to the broader [Ukraine war](https://factrail.ai/drivers/ukraine-war). The immediate test is whether British and US officials publish or obtain enough technical confirmation to know that Ukrainian units have the connectivity they were told had returned, rather than relying on a binary description of "restored."

**Fairness:** Streeting's strongest defence is that he accurately relayed what was said in a ministerial meeting and did not claim personal technical verification. The evidence available on 16 October supports that defence, while Zelenskyy's later statement establishes that practical performance remained incomplete.
