Alexei Navalny

The imprisoned opposition leader died aged 47 after years of politically motivated prosecution, poisoning, isolation and deteriorating detention conditions.

Report

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died on 16 February 2024 in the IK-3 penal colony above the Arctic Circle, according to Russia's prison service. Authorities said he became unwell after a walk and could not be revived. He was 47.

Navalny had survived a 2020 poisoning with a Novichok nerve agent, which independent investigations linked to Russian security officers; the Russian government denied involvement. He returned to Russia in 2021, was arrested and received lengthy sentences in proceedings widely described by international bodies as politically motivated.

His family and associates accused Russian authorities and President Vladimir Putin of responsibility for his death. Russian officials denied wrongdoing and issued a medical explanation. A state bears duties toward people in custody, while individual criminal responsibility for a specific cause requires an independent investigation and evidence not controlled solely by the detaining authority.

Authorities delayed release of the body, and questions about records and access increased distrust. International governments demanded transparency. The official date and place are established; the precise medical mechanism and any unlawful act remained contested.

The account deliberately does not call the death natural or murder without the corresponding evidentiary finding. It records that a prominent government opponent died under state custody after documented mistreatment and severe conditions, a fact that creates an exceptional accountability burden even while forensic conclusions require proof.
