2025 Cambodian–Thai border crisis

Artillery, rockets and airstrikes spread near disputed temple areas, killing civilians and soldiers and displacing border communities.

Report

Large-scale fighting began along the Thailand-Cambodia border on 24 July 2025 after weeks of tension and an earlier deadly clash. Forces exchanged artillery and rocket fire near several disputed areas, and Thailand used combat aircraft against Cambodian military targets.

Both governments accused the other of initiating hostilities. The border includes zones around historic temples whose sovereignty has been disputed despite international court rulings on particular sites. Competing first-fire claims require military, satellite and witness evidence rather than acceptance of either national narrative.

Civilians and soldiers were killed, and large numbers of residents evacuated communities on both sides. Schools and hospitals were affected. Nationality does not make civilians responsible for territorial policy, and protection duties apply equally across the border.

The conflict involved diplomatic downgrades and domestic political pressure in Thailand as well as Cambodian leadership interests. Those factors may influence escalation but do not prove a single planned cause without evidence about orders and sequence.

The border-conflict entry begins with the opening of sustained multi-site fighting, separate from the May clash and the ceasefire four days later. It avoids describing a disputed frontier as having changed legal ownership merely because forces occupied or shelled a location during the exchange.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations faced pressure to support de-escalation while Malaysia held its rotating chair. Regional procedure supplied a diplomatic channel, but ASEAN membership did not automatically enforce a ceasefire on either military.
