2025 Romanian presidential election

The centrist Bucharest mayor defeated nationalist George Simion in a rerun ordered after the 2024 election was annulled.

Report

Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan won Romania's presidential runoff on 18 May 2025, defeating Alliance for the Union of Romanians leader George Simion. The election was a rerun after the Constitutional Court annulled the 2024 contest amid findings concerning campaign irregularities and alleged foreign interference.

Dan ran as an independent with a pro-European platform, while Simion led the first round and promoted nationalist and socially conservative positions. The runoff result reflected a choice between two candidates, not automatic endorsement of every party that supported Dan.

The annulment of the previous election was unprecedented and generated debate about evidence, judicial power and democratic trust. Reporting the 2025 result should preserve that context without treating voters in the invalidated contest as responsible for alleged covert activity.

Romania's election authority confirmed the count, and Simion conceded after initially challenging the result without substantiated proof sufficient to change the result. Judicial challenges followed defined procedures.

This item records the valid runoff outcome, separate from the court's 2024 decision and later inauguration. It avoids calling Dan the winner of the earlier election and makes clear that presidential authority derived from the newly administered vote.

The president represents the state and participates in foreign and defence policy, while the government controls many daily executive functions. That division makes the office consequential without equating the presidential vote with a parliamentary majority.
