HM Treasury is the United Kingdom government's economic and finance ministry, responsible for public finances, fiscal policy, and the broad direction of the economy. It is led politically by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, a senior member of the Cabinet, and is among the oldest departments of the British state. Its functions include setting taxation and spending policy, preparing the government's budgets and fiscal events, managing public expenditure across departments, and overseeing aspects of financial-services and economic policy. The Treasury works within the UK's parliamentary system and alongside independent bodies such as the central bank and the official fiscal watchdog.
