European Union
The EU's independent public prosecutor's office, which investigates and prosecutes fraud and corruption affecting the EU budget across member states.
The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) is an independent body of the European Union, headquartered in Luxembourg, that investigates and prosecutes criminal offences affecting the EU's financial interests. It became operational in 2021 and operates among participating member states under enhanced cooperation, as not all EU members take part. The EPPO's competence covers offences against the Union budget, including certain misuse of EU funds and cross-border value-added-tax offences above set thresholds, together with related criminal conduct. It is led by the European Chief Prosecutor and works through European Prosecutors and delegated prosecutors based in the member states, who conduct investigations and bring cases before national courts. Its competence is defined by the regulation establishing it, and proceedings take place within national criminal-justice systems under judicial supervision.
