Law and Justice (Prawo i Sprawiedliwosc, PiS) is a conservative political party in Poland that formed the national government following the 2015 elections and led it until late 2023. During this period the PiS-led government held executive authority within Poland, a parliamentary republic and member of the European Union. The government enacted changes to the structure and oversight of the judiciary, including reforms affecting the Constitutional Tribunal, the Supreme Court, and judicial appointment and disciplinary procedures. These measures prompted disputes with EU institutions and proceedings before the Court of Justice of the European Union concerning judicial independence and the rule of law. The reforms, the EU's responses, and the associated rulings are matters of public record, and their interpretation is contested among observers.
