The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is a cabinet-level department of the United States federal government, headed by the Attorney General. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., it serves as the principal federal agency for enforcing federal law and administering justice. The department investigates and prosecutes federal crimes, represents the United States in legal matters, and oversees component agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Bureau of Prisons, along with U.S. Attorneys' offices nationwide. It also enforces civil statutes, including antitrust and civil-rights laws, and provides legal advice to the executive branch. Its authority is established by Congress, and prosecutorial decisions and litigation are subject to the courts and to internal and external oversight.
