United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division
International
UN body that produces the authoritative global demographic estimates and projections, including World Population Prospects and the International Migrant Stock series used as the canonical source for migration and fertility data.
About
The Population Division is part of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), based in New York. It is the principal UN body for the study of population trends and dynamics, producing widely cited demographic estimates and projections for countries and regions worldwide. The division compiles and publishes data on fertility, mortality, urbanisation, ageing, and international migration, including the International Migrant Stock dataset and the World Population Prospects series. It provides analysis and technical input to intergovernmental processes addressing population and development, and supports the implementation of related agreements. Its function is data production and analysis; it does not set migration policy, which remains the responsibility of individual states.
