The Government of Ethiopia is the federal authority of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, a large multiethnic country in the Horn of Africa with its capital in Addis Ababa. Under the constitution adopted in the 1990s, the state is organized as an ethnic-based federation of regional states, with executive power exercised by a prime minister and cabinet and a bicameral federal parliament. Its responsibilities include national defense, foreign affairs, fiscal and monetary policy, and oversight of federal institutions, while regional governments hold significant devolved powers. The federal government has been a central party to major political transitions, development programs, and internal conflicts, including the armed conflict in the Tigray region that began in 2020 and was the subject of extensive international attention.
