Jan Peter Balkenende

Not rated

Jan Peter Balkenende led four cabinets in eight years, and most fell early. The first, with the chaotic Pim Fortuyn List, lasted from July 2002 to May 2003 (Government of the Netherlands (opens in a new tab)). The fourth collapsed on 20 February 2010 when Labour walked out over extending the Afghanistan mission (The Guardian (opens in a new tab)). In the June 2010 election his CDA lost 20 of its 41 seats, and he quit as leader and gave up his seat (DutchNews (opens in a new tab)). Bottom line: a serial coalition-builder whose governments kept collapsing and whose party he left halved.
