Karen Bass is an American politician who has served as Mayor of Los Angeles since December 2022, the first woman elected to the office. She is a member of the Democratic Party.
Before becoming mayor, Bass served as a Member of the United States House of Representatives for a Los Angeles-area district and earlier in the California State Assembly, where she served as Speaker. She also founded a community organization in Los Angeles before entering elected office. As mayor she heads the city's executive branch, with responsibilities including the municipal budget, housing, and public safety.
