Martina Kušnírová
Martina Kušnírová was murdered in February 2018 alongside her fiancé, investigative journalist Ján Kuciak; the killings brought down Robert Fico's government. Justice has been partial at best. The gunman, Miroslav Marček, got 23 years in April 2020 (TASR (opens in a new tab)), but in September 2020 a court acquitted businessman Marian Kočner of ordering the murders (BBC (opens in a new tab)). The Supreme Court ordered a retrial in June 2021 (The Guardian (opens in a new tab)), and in May 2023 Kočner was acquitted again (The Guardian (opens in a new tab)). Bottom line: years on, Slovak courts have failed to convict the man prosecutors accused of ordering her killing.
