Her role in the 2024 FAA reauthorisation debate underscores the conflict between passengers, aircraft operators, unions and airport management. Safety rules can save lives while increasing implementation cost. Accessibility requirements can improve journeys for passengers with disabilities, but enforcement and actual airline behaviour determine whether the promised benefit materialises. The appropriate beneficiaries are not just aviation suppliers winning contracts but travellers who can experience measurable improvements in service and safety.

Distribution

Federal drinking-water legislation is another example. Duckworth's office attributes a major water infrastructure programme to the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure package. Public works can reduce exposure to lead and create construction jobs, yet a legislative author cannot legitimately claim credit for every local contractor's work. Communities need evidence of replacements completed, water quality tested and affordability protected. Western implications

Veterans' healthcare raises another access question. Duckworth can press for legislation and challenge agency performance, but the Department of Veterans Affairs and health providers administer care. Funding without clinical staffing may fail to reduce waits. The welfare indicators are actual appointments, treatment availability and outcomes in rural and urban settings. Her experience of military injury may illuminate needs, while critics can fairly demand evidence that every defence or healthcare project offers value.
