Schoof asylum cabinet

What this driver is

Schoof asylum cabinet is one continuing Dutch mechanism: the independent former AIVD director who on 2 July 2024 swore as prime minister of a PVV–VVD–NSC–BBB cabinet after Geert Wilders’s 2023 election win, who fronted what coalition parties called the strictest-ever asylum policy, and whose cabinet collapsed on 3 June 2025 when PVV quit over asylum, after which he remained demissionary until 23 February 2026. It is a mechanism, not a civil-service brochure and not a Soviet-scope repression row.

The driver is not a Wilders twin. Geert Wilders is live. It is not Ukraine. They do not replace it. A 2018 AIVD speech is not this node. This node is 2 July 2024 and 3 June 2025.

It applies to the Netherlands from the 2 July 2024 oath through the 2026 apply date, when Schoof was no longer prime minister (Jetten cabinet from 23 February 2026). It is not proxy-war-intensity and not territorial-revisionism. It is not hung on ukraine-war.

The legal core is the 2 July 2024 royal swearing-in recorded by Rijksoverheid, BBC, and Reuters, and the 3 June 2025 PVV withdrawal and Schoof resignation recorded by Reuters and Rijksoverheid. A speech that calls an independent PM a civic firewall does not change the mechanism.

Mechanism

The file moves welfare through named channels.

First, the oath. On 2 July 2024 King Willem-Alexander swore Dick Schoof and the cabinet. PVV ministers entered office for the first time. Wilders stayed outside the cabinet as kingmaker. Geert Wilders is live. Mark Rutte is live as predecessor.

Second, the asylum programme. Coalition language was the strictest-ever immigration policy.

Third, the collapse. On 3 June 2025 Wilders quit the coalition, accusing partners of failing to back tougher asylum rules. Schoof called the collapse unnecessary and irresponsible and handed his resignation to the King. PVV ministers left. The cabinet continued demissionary until 23 February 2026.

Timing is an oath day and a resignation day. A later genuine contest would be a new fact. It would not hang this driver on Glavlit or Ukraine.

Evidence is strongest for the oath and the 3 June resignation as reported. It is weaker where “strictest ever” is coalition language rather than a single gazette statute. It is weakest where a technician slogan is asked to rebate the PVV programme.

Effect on welfare indicators

This driver, when it actually runs, is a first-order channel into migration-and-coalition series, not into UCDP deaths as a family-template clone.

• Having a say in government: direction lower coalition governability when an independent PM fronts a PVV-backed asylum cabinet that then collapses on asylum. Horizon: a reporting year. Confidence: high for the dated oath and resignation.

Family-template DII padding is not this family.

The welfare sign of the driver is negative: strengthening a PVV-backed asylum cabinet under an independent civil-servant PM is not a civic dawn. The 3 June collapse is stored as the programme’s fracture, not as a unique later plus-hero rebate.

Interactions and contested points

Reinforcement is obvious when PVV ministers sit in the same oath as the independent PM. Offsetting is the claim that Schoof was a firewall against Wilders. Wilders is live. The firewall did not prevent the 3 June asylum rupture.

The strongest competing view is that an independent PM rebates PVV. The oath still installed PVV ministers. That date stays.

A second competing view is that this is ukraine-war. It is not. The Jetten cabinet from 23 February 2026 is a different government’s fact.
