Critical editions of the Vita Aesopi (Planudean and earlier recensions) present a comic-grotesque slave whose body and speech are spectacle.
Context
The Vita is entertainment built on bondage, deformity jokes, and a Delphi killing. Treating it as biography would upgrade fiction. Treating it as harmless folklore would hide the slave-spectacle mechanism.
Aesop is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
