From 1832–33 Chopin organised his Paris life around private piano lessons, charging high fees and keeping a limited list, so that teaching rather than public concerts became the main cash livelihood. He wrote teaching remarks in pupils’ scores; he did not found a state conservatory chair. The row stores the livelihood as an improving labour path. The same fee schedule’s exclusion of non-payers is noted in context and is not minted as a cosmetic twin Fact.

Context

July-Monarchy Paris paid pianists either at the ticket door or in the drawing-room. Chopin disliked the circus of frequent public concerts and chose the drawing-room, which trained a small number of players very intensively. Filtsch’s early death and Müller’s memoirs are later windows on the studio, not extra 1833 acts. Liszt’s competing studio is a neighbouring market. Named pupils and score annotations show a studio that transmitted touch as paid hours; that is livelihood, even when the same list was socially closed.

Shared responsibility is part of Chopin makes private Paris piano teaching his principal livelihood. Naming Frédéric Chopin does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1833-10-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

Why it matters

Improving labour path: a musician earned by transmitting skill rather than by a court sinecure. High confidence on the occupation, medium on any one year’s exact fee table. Modest weight: a private list is not a labour statute. Later myth of the ‘poet who would not teach’ is false on the documents.

What the sources establish

The Institute’s biographical calendar and correspondence programme document the teaching income and named pupils. Grove / Oxford Music Online independently describes teaching as Chopin’s principal Paris livelihood. Official: https://chopin.nifc.pl/en (opens in a new tab). Independent: https://www.oxfordmusiconline.com/ (opens in a new tab). The records establish the occupation and its early-Paris date. They do not establish a unique later European piano-teacher employment series.

Established: by 1833 Chopin was supporting himself in Paris chiefly by private lessons. Not established: a unique labour-market tightness coefficient, or that every later ‘Chopin method’ book is his 1833 syllabus. A contradictory account showing concerts as the main 1833 cash would reopen the livelihood claim. A modern masterclass brand would not.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Mixed effects of Chopin makes private Paris piano teaching his principal livelihood are separate paths.

That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.
