In 1839 Chopin’s Twenty-Four Preludes, Op. 28, were published in Paris by Schlesinger, with a German parallel issue, as a printed cycle covering the major and minor keys. French dedication to Camille Pleyel and German dedication to J. C. Kessler are title-page facts, not extra preludes. The row does not split twenty-four twins. Later complete recordings are reception.

28 (1839-09-01).

Context

A prelude before 1839 was usually a doorway into a fugue or a fantasy. Chopin’s cycle made the doorway the whole public object, ordered by key, short enough to sit on a domestic stand. That is a data-and-access claim: the cycle is a catalogue of states that can be copied. It is not a claim that 1839 tuberculosis was a compositional method. A cycle that can be bought as a book is a public record of twenty-four states; it is not a weather diary and not a later complete-works reprint with another editor’s fingering.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Preludes print is not the Valldemossa winter. Keep illness on its own row. Mixed effects of Schlesinger publishes Chopin’s 24 Preludes, Op. 28 are separate paths.

Why it matters

High confidence on 1839 print. Modest weight: a prelude book is not a statistical office. Majorca’s damp is not added as a second publication date.

That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

What the sources establish

The Institute’s works catalogue dates Op. 28 and the 1839 issues. IMSLP independently hosts nineteenth-century plates, showing the cycle as a sold book of pieces. Official: https://chopin.nifc.pl/en/chopin/dziela (opens in a new tab). Independent: https://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Chopin,_Fr%C3%A9d%C3%A9ric (opens in a new tab). The records establish opus, year, and completeness of the twenty-four. They do not establish a unique later ‘cycle listening’ survey, nor a medical dataset for the island winter, nor a claim that each prelude occupied a numbered day in a cell diary.

Established: Op. 28 was published in 1839 as twenty-four preludes. Not established: that each prelude was written on a single Majorca day, or a unique modern data-protection coefficient. A contradictory first issue lacking the cycle would change the row. A later recording would not.

Shared responsibility is part of Schlesinger publishes Chopin’s 24 Preludes, Op. 28. Naming Frédéric Chopin does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1839-09-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
