In the mid-1830s, including the cluster around 1837, Chopin’s letters abuse Christian Wessel, his London publisher, for slow money, unwanted English titles, and slack issue of the parallel impressions. It is not the industrial fact of parallel print, which is stored as an improving row, and it is not a later collecting-society case. Wessel wanted saleable English names; Chopin wanted his titles and his cash. The row does not allege a proven bribe.
Context
Territorial copyright made the London partner indispensable and hard to punish. Insults in letters (‘Wessel’s beastliness’) are evidence of conflict, not a police file. English titles invented for shop windows and delayed remittances are the capture: the composer needed London plates and could not easily punish the shop that held them. Insults in letters are not an Old Bailey file; they are still a dated contract quarrel inside territorial copyright, and they are not the improving industrial fact of three-market issue stored on another row.
If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.
Why it matters
Medium confidence on the cash figures, high on the quarrel’s existence. Modest weight. Parallel publication as industrial access remains a different sign.
Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

Frédéric Chopin

responsibility level 0.28 · verified
He sold English rights to Wessel and then complained of delay, titles, and money. Wessel ran the London shop. Complex contracting author, not an English court.

What the sources establish
It records a documented capture of a composer’s English stream by a shop he did not control.
The British Library’s music collections document Wessel’s London issues of Chopin. The Cambridge Companion independently discusses Chopin’s publisher relations and the English market’s friction. Official: https://www.bl.uk/ (opens in a new tab). Independent: https://doi.org/10.1017/ccol9780521404907 (opens in a new tab). The records establish the Wessel relationship and Chopin’s complaints. They do not establish a criminal conviction.
Established: Chopin fought Wessel over English issues and payment in the 1830s. Not established: a court finding of fraud, or a unique later corruption index. A complete 1837 receipt showing punctual full pay without title fights would soften the row.
That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.
Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Wessel quarrel is not the three-market industrial fact stored elsewhere. Mixed effects of Chopin quarrels with Christian Wessel over English editions and payment are separate paths.
Shared responsibility is part of Chopin quarrels with Christian Wessel over English editions and payment. Naming Frédéric Chopin does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1837-01-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
