The Anti-Rightist Campaign opens after the Hundred Flowers

On 8 June 1957 People’s Daily published ‘What is this for?’, marking the turn from the Hundred Flowers, in which Mao had invited open criticism, to the Anti-Rightist Campaign that labelled perhaps half a million people as rightists. Mao’s February 1957 contradictions speech had set the intellectual trap. In the causal graph this event weakens Protection of Minority Rights, a driver that strengthens Having a say in government — a worsening welfare path.

Context

Khrushchev’s 1956 secret speech and Polish and Hungarian unrest frightened the leadership and also tempted a controlled ventilation. Intellectuals named party privilege. Mao then redefined their speech as antagonistic. Deng Xiaoping’s secretariat handled percentages. Camps, job loss, and family stigma followed. The Cultural Revolution is a later Fact.

Shared responsibility is part of The Anti-Rightist Campaign opens after the Hundred Flowers. Naming Mao Zedong does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1957-06-08 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

Why it matters

Worsening rights path of high weight. Direct contribution. High confidence on the reversal; medium on any one labelled total.

Mao invited criticism in 1956–57, then reversed and labelled critics rightists. Deng Xiaoping ran much of the 1957 campaign machinery; Mao set the trap and the quota logic.

What the sources establish

The contradictions speech is in Selected Works. Britannica independently narrates Hundred Flowers and the Anti-Rightist sequel. Wilson Center and later PRC rehabilitation documents independently confirm a mass labelling campaign. No Factrail original rightist census is supplied.

Established: Mao invited criticism then backed the June 1957 reversal into a labelling campaign. Not established: that every critic was a planted agent, or a unique exact count.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

If a number is not in the two records named above, it is not supplied here.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. They are one bait-and-purge sequence here. Mixed effects of The Anti-Rightist Campaign opens after the Hundred Flowers are separate paths.

The contribution type is direct. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.
