In the early hours of 13 September 1971 a Trident carrying Lin Biao, Ye Qun, and Lin Liguo crashed in Mongolia. Official PRC narrative said Lin had plotted to assassinate Mao and was fleeing after exposure. Mao had named Lin successor in the 1969 constitution then withdrawn trust in 1970–71.

Context

Lin had compiled the Little Red Book and replaced Peng at defence. The 1970 Lushan clash over a state chairmanship, and Mao’s inspection tour of 1971, isolated Lin. Whether a detailed assassination plot existed is contested; that the relationship collapsed and a purge followed is not. Zhou managed the aftermath.

Why it matters

Worsening polarization path: the designated successor was destroyed, teaching that no colleague was safe. Medium confidence on conspiracy details; high on the crash and purge.

Mao had made Lin his successor then turned on him; the 1971 flight and crash destroyed the PLA’s leading Maoist faction. Lin’s own plot, if any, remains contested.

Wilson Center’s Lin Biao affair topic publishes documents and later analysis. Britannica independently dates the 13 September 1971 crash. Mongolian and Soviet crash evidence is independent of the PRC plot story. Confidence on the plot narrative stays medium.

Established: Lin died in a 13 September 1971 crash after Mao turned on him. Not established: every clause of the official assassination-plot story.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Mixed effects of Lin Biao dies in a plane crash after the collapse of his relationship with Mao are separate paths.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.

Shared responsibility is part of Lin Biao dies in a plane crash after the collapse of his relationship with Mao. Naming Mao Zedong does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1971-09-13 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.
