China detonates its first atomic bomb at Lop Nur

On 16 October 1964 the PRC detonated a uranium fission device at Lop Nur, becoming a nuclear-armed state. Mao had ordered a bomb programme after Korea and especially after the 1960 Soviet cutoff. In the causal graph this event strengthens Energy Security, a driver that strengthens Poverty headcount ratio at $3.00 a day (2021 PPP) (% of population) — a worsening welfare path.

Context

The 1957 New Defence Technical Accord with Moscow had been torn up. Fallout and later test series are environmental costs not converted into extra Facts here. It does not offset famine deaths.

Why it matters

Complex contribution. Modest-to-medium weight.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Mixed effects of China detonates its first atomic bomb at Lop Nur are separate paths.

Who was responsible

Contribution type and responsibility level for each recorded actor — not sole-author shorthand.

Established: a Chinese fission test occurred on 16 October 1964 under Mao’s political authority. Not established: that he designed the device, or that the test reduced civilian energy poverty.

Shared responsibility is part of China detonates its first atomic bomb at Lop Nur. Naming Mao Zedong does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1964-10-16 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.
